Last week we took part in a conference “Stand Tall for the Rule of Law” at the Ivan Franko Lviv National University to mark the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. We spoke about how the Universal Declaration of Human Rights led to the development of human rights treaties, strengthened protection in national laws and inspired human rights movements. We discussed how to promote accountability for serious violations occurring in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, especially for torture and arbitrary detention. We also exchanged views on the human rights aspects of reintegrating persons after de-occupation.
The event marked was co-sponsored by the ASIL - American Society of International Law, the Ukrainian Association of International Law and our mission and brought together 150 legal professionals, scholars, representatives of international organizations and civil society.
