The XI Annual International Forum on the Case-law of the European Court of Human Rights

We had a wonderful opportunity to speak yesterday with Ukrainian judges and legal practitioners about fair trials in conflict-related cases. Every detail is important: the precise qualification of war crimes in Ukraine’s criminal code, creating the possibility of alternative preventive measures for defendants, and the procedures for retrial and notification for in absentia proceedings. Justice will be served only if legal proceedings are fair, and decisions taken in national courts will hold upon appeal, including before the European Court of Human Rights.

We are grateful to the Council of Europe and the OSCE for organizing this forum at Lviv’s Ivan Franko University on the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights.
